The minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, stated following a conversation with the heads of the municipality of Vrbas that a full reconstruction of the Vrbas-Sombor was to be done and that trains would run at 120 kilometers per hour on it in the future. The minister said that the value of the project would be around EUR 80 million.

As he emphasized, the Vrbas-Sombor railway is in a very bad condition and there is no passenger traffic on it at the moment, and the decision to soon open an engineering design tender has also been made, with the plan being to build a whole new railway, including the upper and lower structures, as well as to electrify the railway.

According to him, by mid-2023, an agreement should be signed on the construction of the Sombor-Kula-Vrbas-Srbobran-Becej-Novi Becej-Kikinda fast railway, 185 kilometers long.

Vesic said that the fast railway would be built in four stages and that the works would start simultaneously from Backi Breg, from Nakovo and from the highway to Srbobran and Vrbas, that is, Kula.

He noted that the construction of two interchanges was planned, essentially amounting to a bypass route around Vrbas, where the municipality plans an industrial zone.

– That will do a lot to bring investors, but also to unload the traffic in the municipality, because cargo transit traffic will no longer pass through the center of the municipality – he added.

Vesic reminded that several important infrastructure projects also encompassed Vrbas, such as the project of the construction of the Novi Sad-Subotica fast railway, to be completed by 2025.

He added that the ministry would help build the sewer in several places in Vrbas through the “Clean Serbia” project.

He also added that the ministry had taken on the obligation of building a transit road in Danila Bojovica Street in Vrbas, five kilometers long, through the PE Roads of Serbia.

– The Vrbas-Backo Dobro Polje and Vrbas-Zmajevo roads will be included in the plans and, in line with the possibilities, be planned for this or next year – he said.
