The expansion of the Backi Breg-Hercegszanto border checkpoint was discussed in Novi Sad. The investment is realized as part of the cross-border cooperation, from EU funds. The aim is to enable larger trucks to use this checkpoint.

The reconstructed border checkpoint would connect to the planned traffic route between Sombor and Kikinda, which would also bring a considerable economic benefit to the local self-government and the surrounding settlements.

– The data that 185 million residents of the EU live in one of the border regions speaks in favor of how important it is to work on these cross-border projects and, in general, invest in the cross-border belt. Because, it is very often that these border regions are marginalized and insufficiently developed, even bearing some historic scars – said Vidosava Enderic, the assistant provincial secretary for regional development.

The project is carried out in cooperation between the company for the development of national infrastructure from Hungary, the PE Roads of Serbia and the Urban Planning Institute of Vojvodina.

– Our colleagues from the Roads of Serbia are preparing all the project-technical documentation, and, as for the Urban Planning Institute of Vojvodina, in the upcoming period, they will do an analysis of the environmental impact of this project and, if needed, certain protective measures will be proscribed – said Predrag Knezevic, the director of the Urban Planning Institute of Vojvodina.

There are currently nine border checkpoints between Hungary and Serbia, of which six are designed only for passenger traffic, whereas only two can accommodate cargo traffic. The expansion would increase the daily traffic of people and goods at the border checkpoint – said Istvan Pasztor, the president of the Assembly of Vojvodina.

The works on the project began in February 2021, and the completion is envisaged by the end of July 2022. The value of these works is around EUR 470,000.
