Volvo plans to launch crash-proof car by 2020
People at the Swedish car maker Volvo believe that they will be able to launch a crash-proof car in seven years thanks to the increasingly fast development of safety technologies and the growing capacity and decreasing cost of integrated computers that already control a number of functions within the car.
The company is currently working on six technologies that should help accomplish this goal, the regional business web portal SeeBiz reports.
Volvo's new model XC90 will feature a system able to detect the edge of the road and apply steer assist if needed. It’s the first system in the world that is able to monitor where the physical road ends. The adaptive cruise control with steer assist helps the driver stay in a lane and follow the rhythm of traffic.
Volvo is also working on a system that allows cars to communicate with one another and the environment around them (V2V - vehicle-to-vehicle communication).
