There are no more obstacles to the removal of the Old Sava Bridge, which has been announced on several occasions for years now. The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia has issued the permit for its demolition, and from November 1, this route which has been bridging the Sava for more than 80 years, will be closed to traffic, Politika learns.

As the daily writes, the fact that the formal legal obstacles to its disassembly have been removed in order for a new arch bridge with a higher traffic capacity to be built does not mean that the removal of the Old Sava Bridge will begin next month. Instead, the job is most likely to start next year. The reason, as Politika has learned from an engineer involved in the preparation of the technical documentation, for both the old and the new bridge, is that the demanding works on the columns of the old bridge and the access routes on both sides of the river have to be done first, before the well-known green arch structure is taken down and moved to a temporary construction site, a fenced-off space between the Old Sava Bridge and Branko’s Bridge.

The disassembly is a very complex job and will be done carefully, which means that the existing bridge will be neither drilled nor cut, but taken down in one piece from the columns to the coast on the construction site, where it will be taken apart and then sent off on the river to another place, and where exactly, I don’t know – Politika’s source pointed out and added that the requests for the issuing of the building permit for the new Sava bridge and the access routes in the old part of the city and on the New Belgrade side had been filed.

The task of designing the new bridge was entrusted to the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad, Mostogradnja Ing doo, Millennium Team and IO Design Enterprise from Belgrade. The contractor is PowerChina, and expert supervision will be done by Louis Berger Adria and CPM Consulting.
