The deputy prime minister and minister of defense of Serbia, Milos Vucevic, said that, by the end of the year, a trip between Belgrade and Subotica on that railroad would take 80 minutes.
The ceremony was also attended by the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, the ambassador of China to Serbia, Li Ming, the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Djuric, the president of the municipality of Backa Topola, Adrian Satmari, the manager of the City of Subotica, Zagorka Panic, and representatives of the Chinese embassy and China State Railway Group CO.
Vesic announced that the railroad would be completed a year before the deadline and that its construction meant that Serbia would have a better connection in terms of traffic and become the backbone on Corridor X, which was becoming a corridor for fast trains.
– When the fast railroad to Budapest is completed and when, by the end of the year, we start building the new 230 kilometers of a fast railroad from Belgrade to Nis, we will start developing a fast railroad toward Skopje, and then toward Thessaloniki, so in the next years, we will have over 1,500 kilometers of a fast railroad between Athens and Budapest. That will secure a future for the Western Balkans and put Serbia in the central place of development – said Vesic.
Li Ming expressed gratitude to the Government of Serbia for the great care and support to the construction of the Belgrade-Budapest railroad and added that, under the strategic leadership of the heads of the two states, the bilateral relations of China and Serbia continued deepening and that the economic and trade cooperation was strong.
The high-speed railroad from Belgrade to Budapest is one of the most important projects in Serbia. The Serbian section of the railroad is 183.1 km long and 58 new bridges and 45 culverts have been built on it, and one viaduct has been reconstructed.
The railroad will be electrified and equipped with modern signalization and safety devices. It is expected that, once the works on the Hungarian side are finished, it will take less than three hours to travel from Belgrade to Budapest by train.
