The dismantling of the Old Sava Bridge should begin in June, and the deadline for the construction of the new one is two years, the mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Sapic, announced today.

– Parallel with this, we have started cleaning the space between Branko’s Bridge, the “Usce” Shopping Center and Hotel Hyatt. A large roundabout is being made there, connecting Zemun, Nikole Tesle Blvd and Vladimira Popovica Blvd. This year, we will extend Zorana Djindjica Blvd, which reaches Milentija Popovica Street, to Vladimira Popovica Blvd and citizens will be able to go from there to the left toward the big interchange and right on Branko’s Bridge toward Zemun, or to the right on the New Sava Bridge. When you cross the bridge, you enter the tunnel near the Faculty of Economics and exit to Despota Stefana Street. Practically, you can go between currently the two most remote parts of the city in a couple of minutes. The completion of it all will coincide with the opening of the first subway line – Sapic said for TV Happy.

He added that the traffic project which pertained to the big interchange, the New Sava Bridge and the tunnel would reduce traffic jams in the city center by 14% and pollution by 12%, Beoinfo reports.

No tram from Ustanicka Street to Smederevo Road

The mayor said that the tram tracks from Cvetkova Pijaca (Cvetko Green Market) to Ustanicka Street would be moved to the middle of the boulevard, whereas the boulevard was to be expanded by another two traffic lanes between Ustanicka Street and the Smederevo Road, but without tram traffic.

– At the most recent session of the City Assembly of Belgrade, the plan for the expansion of the tram network was canceled and we thereby enabled an unobstructed expansion of the boulevard, with the demolition of only three to four buildings – Sapic announced.
