Palace in Raca to be adapted – Reconstruction requires around EUR 5 million
Raca-based Nas Med, a factory for the collection and marketing of honey, is being built right across from the only palace south of the Sava and the Danube, Karadjordje’s Home, initially meant for the housing of war orphans by Queen Maria Karadjordjevic and built using the funds received from Romania as aid to Serbian children.
The palace used to be a school facility for a while, but it is now out of use. The Municipality of Raca is ready to give it to the Beekeeping Association of Serbia (SPOS) for use.
– The first estimates say that the adaptation of this grand edifice would cost around EUR 5 million and we plan to find someone to help us finance this through a project or in some other adequate way – SPOS says on its website.
The first such opportunity arose recently and is highly likely to be realized as soon as next year, SPOS says. If it comes to pass, a section of the palace might be used for the purposes of beekeeping, which would make for a perfect single unit with the Nas Med facility and further increase the quality of the promotion of honey as a products and beekeeping as part of the economy of Serbia.
For now, SPOS is considering having an educational-congress center for beekeepers of Serbia, the apitherapy center of Serbia, the center of beekeeping tourism of Serbia and the national museum of beekeeping of Serbia in the premises.
Time and possibilities will show whether any of this is realized.
Let us remind that Karadjordje’s Home in Raca was built in 1932. As a cultural monument, it is an immovable cultural good. As a building, Karadjordje’s Home is modeled after monumental medieval palaces. It features five rampart towers on the four corners and in the center of the front façade. It used to be considered one of the most beautiful facilities in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
