Gebrüder Weiss, as a leader in transport and logistics and one of the oldest companies in the sector, transports all types of goods by road, sea and air, on all continents, offering customized solutions for the supply chain, including warehousing, picking and packaging of goods.

The company, whose portfolio of services includes project logistics - specialized solutions for the transport of heavy and oversized goods, as well as customs clearance, consulting and IT solutions, entered the Serbian market almost two decades ago.

Roland Raith, general director of Gebrüder Weiss Serbia and Montenegro, points out that since entering the Serbian market in 2004, the company has invested more than 18 million EUR.

How does business in Serbia look like from today`s perspective, after 19 years of presence on this market?

- Today, Gebrüder Weiss employs 280 workers at four locations in the country (Belgrade - Dobanovci, Niš, Novi Sad and Strojkovce) and has 20,000 m2 of logistics space with capacity for 14,000 pallets, as well as 4,100 m2 of office space. Serbia has become the starting point for our services for transporting goods to neighboring countries. In the meantime, we have also expanded our home delivery services for supplying end customers within e-commerce, and by introducing the "myGW portal" in Serbia, we have enabled our clients to digitally process and transparently monitor all shipping and documentation processes for their shipments. Last year, Gebrüder Weiss Serbia processed more than 240,000 shipments and transported approximately 347,400 tons of goods.

What are your further plans on the Serbian market?

We intend to further strengthen our position in Serbia. The plan is to invest more than EUR 1.2 million in 2023 in order to further improve our infrastructure in this market.
The focus will continue to be on ensuring economic, environmental and social sustainability, both in Serbia and globally, and an integral part of the company`s policy is commitment to quality while seeking more environmentally friendly transport solutions and contributing to the development of the social environment in which we operate.

What exactly is Gebrüder Weiss doing and planning in the field of environmental protection?

We are increasingly focused on how to make logistics services as energy efficient as possible, using various measures. In Serbia, Gebrüder Weiss owns five low-emission CNG gas trucks. We have also established a more sustainable transport chain by rail to Central Europe for large clients and with all these moves we have achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions of 580 tonnes in the last year. It is also planned to introduce an energy monitoring system this year and to equip our logistics terminal in Belgrade-Dobanovci with photovoltaic systems. The goal is for Gebrüder Weiss to be climate neutral by 2030, and that`s why we launched the "Zero Emmisions" service in 2021, which allows users to calculate the CO2 emissions of transported cargo and promotes certified climate protection projects.

How have the ongoing crises and recent supply chain issues affected the company`s operations?

When the flow of goods changes, Gebrüder Weiss reacts quickly to changes in the flow of goods with its agility and flexibility as a family business, and with the appropriate transport connections and IT solutions. The coronavirus pandemic was a special challenge, we protected the health of our employees in the best possible way, but we managed to maintain the supply chain by constantly and directly communicating with our customers, adapting daily to the current situation.

Tell us about some of the global plans, too?

Gebrüder Weiss regularly evaluates market opportunities and invests in new technologies and services to enhance its portfolio. A recent example is the increase in the flow of goods along the Middle Corridor of the New Silk Road in Central Asia, between China and Europe. In order to adapt to this trend, we are currently expanding our transport and logistics services in countries along the Middle Corridor, south of Russia.
