The Framework Agreement on the Design and Construction of the Makis Depot, which is a necessary infrastructure facility within the construction of the Belgrade Subway, worth a total of EUR 200 million was signed on Friday at the Palace of Serbia.

The framework agreement was signed by the deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Serbia, Sinisa Mali, the acting director of the PUE “Beogradski metro i voz”, Andreja Mladenovic, the acting secretary of the Public Transport Secretariat, Radovan Kremic, and the authorized representative of PowerChina, Yang Fan.

Mali pointed out that the framework agreement was another important step toward the construction of a subway system in Belgrade.

– Today we signed a very important agreement with PowerChina. This is another step toward the realization of the large project of the construction of a subway system in Belgrade. It is the Agreement on the Design and Construction of the Makis Depot, the place from which the entire subway system will be controlled. It will the main place for the maintenance of all the subway trains. It is a project, an agreement worth around EUR 200 million, and the designing and the construction will take 60 months – Mali said.

The services and the works covered by the agreement with the Chinese partners entail the designing and the execution of the works on the construction of the administrative building with the operating-control center and other necessary facilities, among which are inspection halls, maintenance halls, halls for the parking and maintenance of trains, halls for infrastructure maintenance, and entrance-exit facility, substations and sprinkler stations, with full installation and equipment for each of the facilities.

He added that the plan also envisaged the designing and construction of the rail track substructure in the depot for a total track length of around 10 kilometers, the designing and construction of maneuvering areas and internal routes with a total length of around 4.7 kilometers with the accompanying infrastructure, the exterior development of the depot of a total area of around 34 hectares and all the connections to the city infrastructure network.

The minister pointed out that the works in Makisko Polje, where the first subway line was to start, were going without a problem. He reminded that the works had begun in November 2021. The works encompass a huge space of as many as 72 hectares, and the preparation of the embankment and the terrain on which the depot is to be built is well on its way.

– Until 2028, the first Belgrade subway line should be completed, and the second one should be completed by 2030. The first line will have a total length of 21.4 kilometers and go from Zeleznik to Mirijevo. The second goes from Mirijevo to Bezanija, while the route of the third line is from Banjica to Bezanija. It will be a system of three subway lines. Together with other transport systems in Belgrade – trams, trolleys, buses, it will be a whole new public transport system – Mali pointed out and added that the project realized a decades-long dream of the citizens of Serbia.

According to him, this big project will contribute to the further development of the infrastructure, the solving of traffic problems, pollution in Belgrade, the development of the whole country. It is important not just for Belgrade, but for all citizens of Serbia.

– In the next ten days or so, I expect another important agreement which pertains to the construction of the subway system – Mali pointed out.

A full control of the systems of the fully automated Line 1 of the subway will be done from the Makis Depot through the Control Center, which will be located in the administrative building. In addition to controlling and regulating the traffic of automated trains, the Control Center will also run and supervise all the electrical-mechanical facilities in the stations (elevators, escalators, platform doors), the evacuation-ventilation openings, facilities in the depot.

The Makis Depot will serve for the maintenance of the trains of the Belgrade Subway, in the sense of major repairs such as the replacement of bogies, the replacement of main transformers and all the repairs requiring the lifting of train elements with lifts for the trains on the lines 2 and 3. Also, the Makis Depot will serve for the parking and maintenance, inspection and regular exterior and interior washing of the trains on Line 1 and some trains on Line 2 of the subway.
