While recently visiting the location in Surcin where the new National Stadium, facilities for EXPO 2027 and the new Belgrade Fair are soon to be built, the minister of finance of Serbia, Sinisa Mali, stated that the biggest construction site in that part of Europe, on around 150 hectares, would be activated there not long after.

– This is becoming the biggest project, the biggest construction endeavor in this part of Europe, a place where a large number of residential, office and commercial buildings will be raised as well – stated Mali, as announced by the Ministry of Finance.

He pointed out that the new stadium would take up around 32 hectares of land, whereas 25 hectares are meant for the EXPO space, and hotels and residential and side facilities will be built on the rest of the land. Mali said that the construction of the EXPO complex and the construction of the Belgrade subway would be the two biggest construction projects in that part of Europe.

– I am proud that Belgrade is the host of EXPO 2027. We won against America, Thailand, Argentina, Spain. We expect over three million visitors in 2027 alone, with an income of over EUR 1 billion – Mali said.

He added that Serbia would host over 120 countries and that Belgrade had 11,400 beds on offer at that moment, whereas the upcoming exhibitions would require at least twice as much. EXPO, according to him, is bringing a lot of work for construction companies, but also quarries in Serbia, since the first thing to be done is a big project of pouring sand and stone in order to reach the required altitude.

– We have a big job ahead of us, but everything has to be completed by the end of 2026 – Mali said and added that this also entailed the construction of four new traffic routes and one interchange.

The specialized EXPO 2027, with the theme “Play for Humanity – Sports and Music for All”, will be held in Belgrade from May 15 though August 15, 2027. The planned EXPO complex will include fair halls, pavilions, accommodation capacities and commercial facilities and be connected with the city center and the airport.

During his visit, Mali was accompanied by the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, who announced on Instagram that the place would bring “enormous opportunities and lots of work to Belgrade and Serbia.”
