Judging by the first agreements, German company Solventus, famous for its greenhouse production of vegetables and flowers, is serious in its intention to invest in Smederevo. Last week this company signed a Memorandum of Understanding for business and technical cooperation with the City, and if everything goes as planned, this non-binding document may grow into a concrete agreement as early as in a month, the Smederevo daily Nase novine reports.
According to this daily, Germans have negotiated with few towns, but Smederevo's offer seems the most attractive at the moment. Will Smederevo be lucky enough to be picked by this investor like it was chosen by the Finnish company PKC?
What is it that Solventus would build? The MoU reads that they are interested in "building and operating greenhouses for the production of vegetables for many years". For this investment, Germans seek 200 hectares of land to rent. Within three years, they would invest EUR 350 million in greenhouses.
According to the plan, the greenhouses would employ 1,500 workers and produce 80,000 tons of vegetables a year. Aside from vegetables, Germans would probably grow flowers as well, mainly orchids.
The land lot that is interested to Germans is situated alongside the road M-24, in Godominsko field. Solventus has already rented 54 hectares, Nase novine writes.
- By the year's end, as they claim, they could organize production on the first 10 hectares and then successively expand it to all 200 hectares during the next year – Smederevo Mayor Jasna Avramovic told Nase novine.
