Strabag takes over more and more building sites in Slovenia
Due to the bankruptcy of leading Slovenian construction companies, as well as because of dumping prices, the Austrian construction company Strabag is taking over more and more building sites in Slovenia and constantly wins tenders for new projects, the Ljubljana newspaper Dnevnik reports.
Over the last few months alone, Strabag has managed to win several important public tenders, such as over EUR 100 million worth of construction of a regional waste disposal and recycling center in the vicinity of Ljubljana, maintenance of local roads, etc., whereas the market share of Slovenian construction companies is constantly shrinking after the collapse of Ljubljana-based SCT, Velenje-based Vegrad and other largest Slovenian builders, the daily writes.
- We have nothing against competition, but only if same rules apply to everybody - Alenka Abversek from the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce told Dnevnik, expressing her doubt that Strabag was offering dumping prices in Slovenia and that the Austrian company was favored because it was backed by Austrian banks, whereas Slovenian banks cannot provide a good guarantee to Slovenian construction companies.
