Although it is intensively working on the development of industrial zones, the municipality of Srbobran also impatiently expects investments in tourism, fishing and hunting tourism in particular.

This is due to the fact that there are rich forests and pastures in Srbobran, Turija and Nadalj, where pheasants, partridges, rabbits and roe deer are grown and hunted, while the banks of Great Backa Canal, the Krivaja River and Beljanska Bara are perfect for fishermen. Hunting grounds in this municipality span an area of nearly 28,000 hectares.

All this was more than enough for investors from the boot-shaped country to get interested in Backa's hunting grounds. For years hunters from the Apennines have been returning happy from the forests of Sintomas (as people used to call Srbobran), and we may soon expect first investments from Italy in hunting tourism in this area.

Mayor Zeljko Bogojevic says to eKapija that Srbobran negotiates with several Italian companies through the Italian Chamber of Commerce.

- Italians see Srbobran as a municipality that can offer a lot in hunting and fishing tourism. We are negotiating various projects, and the representatives of their chamber of commerce have visited us three or four times over the last two months.

Considering that our country used to generate up to EUR 30 million a year in revenues from hunting tourism, while it now makes less than a tenth of that amount, it is clear that this field is very significant for Serbia, which primarily lacks facilities that could acommodate large groups of hunters, with dogs, so that every investor in this business is precious.

Our interlocutor points out that the recent placing of Beljanska Bara under the protection of the state is important for Srbobran. The nature park Beljanska Bara, which stretches across the municipalities of Srbobran and Becej, was declared a protected area on October 18th, after an agreement was signed by Becej Major Vuk Radojevic and Srbobran Mayor Zoran Mladenovic, whereas JVP Vode Vojvodine was appointed as the park manager.

Beljanska Bara is a small body of water 20 kilometers long, created from shallow troughs on the territory of Becej. The last four kilometers of this waterbody lie on the territory of Srbobran. Beljanska Bara flows into Danube-Tisa-Danube (DTD) Canal near Turija. It is a habitat for a large number of birds, fish and mammals, featuring the hatcheries of certain indigenous fish species.

- We have joint investment plans with the municipality of Becej, which include investments in the development of hunting and fishing tourism on the territory of Beljanska Bara. Our intention is to soon apply together for grants from EU funds - says our interlocutor.

Hosting the Olympics

Srbobran will host the Vojvodina Workers' Olympics in 2015. For that purpose, this municipality should get new athletic fields and sports arenas, swimming pools, bawling alley, center for mini sports, etc. Aside from the renovation of the dillapidated hotel Elan, our interlocutor also announces the possibility of the construction of new accommodation facilities for athletes and organizers. The previous Workers' Olympics, which was held in Backa Palanka, gathered about 3,000 workers from Vojvodina, 250 organizers, referees and delegates and 500 volunteers.

- The first thing to do is to analyse the overall state - what Srbobran has, what needs to be renovated, what has to be built, which sports and hotel facilities we lack - says Bogojevic.

- Of course, we require assistance from the province in improving the sports infrastructure. I expect the work on these projects to start in 2013.

As it was announced earlier, urban plans are designed for an area spaning 22 hectares, where the construction of football, athletic and several training fields is in the pipeline.

Although the previous authorities announced that the construction of an aqua park would also kick off in 2012, our interlocutor says that this project is not among the priorities for now.

- At this moment, our vision is not heading in that direction. For an underdeveloped municipality, with an exceptional number of unemployed people, construction of an aqua park is not a priority. In the future, when the living standard of our citizens improves, we will consider implementing this project as well.

Ethnic village in Turija

For several years now the people of Turija, which is famous for sausages and hams, hope to get an ethnic village, which is also envisaged by the Spatial Plan for the Srbobran municipality.

At the Investexpo fair in Novi Sad, this project was presented to potential investors. The building land for this tourist complex is mainly owned by the state (10.79 hectares), while 3.356 hectares are in private possession.

There is an access road to the land lots where this ethnic village is supposed to be built, which are situated next to the construction area in Turija, in the vicinity of the place where the Krivaja River flows into DTD Canal. These lots are not equipped with infrastructure. As people at the municipality of Srbobran explain, there is a possibility of collecting all permits and consents in a shorter time than usual.
