Serbian Railways soon to get new railway bridge across the Velika Morava on Corridor X
A new railway bridge across the Velika Morava river near Cuprija will be completed either in late 2012 or early 2013, Serbian Railways CEO Milovan Markovic announced on August 24th.
This bridge on the rail route of Corridor X was supposed to be finished early this month, but the contractor had difficulties due to a high water level of the Velika Morava over a long period of time, Markovic told Tanjug news agency.
The contractor is the Austrian-Slovenian consortium Alpina-Meteorit, and the project is financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) with somewhat less than EUR 9 million.
The new double-track bridge 322.5 meters long will rest on six pillars, while its steel structure will weigh 2,400 tonnes.
Works on the bridge near Cuprija kicked off February 2011.
Markovic reminded that that bridge across the Velika Morava was being built as part of the new double-track railroad from Gilje near Cuprija to Paracin.
The Italian consortium JV Italiana Construzioni - Consorzio Armatori Ferroviari Italy signed an agreement with Serbian Railways on July 2nd to build a new double-track railroad from the Gilje stop to the station in Paracin.
This Italian consortium got the job because it offered to do it for EUR 16.2 million within the period of 415 days. These works will also be financed by the EIB.
