The National Assembly of Serbia yesterday adopted the Law on Amendments to the Law on Energy, which, among other things, envisages the lifting of the moratorium on nuclear energy in Serbia. This practically enables the lifting of the ban on the construction of nuclear power plants in the country.

Let us remind that the moratorium was imposed in 1989 due to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster from 1986.

The competent minister, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, said for RTS in mid-November, announcing the lifting of the moratorium, that “nuclear energy is base energy and the aim is to get new gas power plants, but to also secure base energy, so that we can also develop renewable energy.”

At the time, she also confirmed the statement of the president of Serbia that the country was willing to buy a 5-10% share in the new Hungarian nuclear power plant in Paks.
