The postal traffic as many remember it has been changing in the past years – there are fewer and fewer letters and more and more packages, due to the increase in electronic trade.

The digitization of postal traffic is also discussed at the 40th General Assembly of the Association of European Public Postal Operators – PostEurop in Belgrade, which is attended by 55 European postal operators from 53 countries.

Zoran Andjelkovic, the acting director of the Post of Serbia, points out that the main topic of the General Assembly is the application of artificial intelligence in the functioning of postal operators and reminds that post offices have been promoters of new technological solutions, such as telegraphs and telephones.

– Even today, in Europe and the world, it is the post offices that have to be the first to apply artificial intelligence. Serbia is trying to keep up with the world and to maybe even be ahead of the most – Andjelkovic points out for RTS.

According to him, there will be robots in a considerable number of postal centers by the end of the year in Belgrade, Kraljevo, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Nis, which will sort the goods and accelerate the process of sending parcels to citizens, but also enable the employees to do their jobs more easily.

Andjelkovic points out that AI accelerates the processes, but also that it is important to preserve the tradition.

– Traditional postal traffic, when it comes to letters, will exist. I feel sorry, for example, that postcards are disappearing. Bills and letters will increasingly be delivered through post boxes. We have to keep the tradition and accept new technologies – concludes Andjelkovic.
