An indispensable detail in the fashion industry, stripes have long conquered the interior as well. Upright or horizontal, neutral or bright, on the walls of the bathroom or on the carpet in the living room, they bring order to the space, and they fit perfectly with both traditional and modern interior decoration.

They are back again this year with a bang after several years of dominant earth tones, beige shades and "hotel interiors". They are the right choice for everyone who wants something bolder in their home, but they are also great because they are timeless and as such can be part of different interiors, without fear of going out of fashion in a few years. They combine beautifully with flowers, circles and other patterns and have the power to change the space, decorators assure.

Be careful with the fine lines

As in fashion, in the interior, vertical and horizontal stripes leave a different impression. Vertical ones "elongate" the space, which is why they will come in handy in the attic, horizontal ones are more modern, make the room wider, so they are an excellent choice for smaller rooms.

The larger the room, the wider the stripes on the walls should be, thin stripes in a large space can look messy. Just like on clothes, finer stripes with smaller spacing can be visually demanding because they tire the eye, so you need to be careful with them, but there is no problem with wide ones, the designers note.

One of the easiest ways to introduce stripes into the interior is to buy a rug with lines, and if you don`t want to overdo it, try a wide stripe down the middle of the armchair. Otherwise, they are recommended everywhere, on wallpaper, pillows, armchairs and carpets in the living room, on bed linen and curtains in the bedroom. They can be particularly effective in the bathroom on the wall in black and white.

Which colors to choose?

Some decorators say that neutral stripes are timeless and, unlike bright colors, will never go out of style. A chair or an old armchair upholstered in a neutral striped pattern can fit into almost any interior, and at the same time, gives a special touch to the space. Neutral pattern does not only mean beige, brown and other warm earthy tones - blue is also neutral when it comes to stripes, especially the darker shades of this color.

The combination of similar tones, for example beige and white, is very elegant, and the more contrasting the colors, the more striking the impression. In small spaces where you don`t stay long, like the hallway, feel free to be bold, so choose bright colors, leave more neutral ones for the bedroom and living room. Always keep in mind that the eye must rest somewhere.

When it comes to combining stripes on different elements, lead with the motto "less is more". They can be very interesting in combination with floral motifs, for example wallpapers with large flowers and leaves.
