Construction of underground garage with 350 to 400 spaces planned in Sabac – Public-private partnership being considered

The City of Sabac is planning to solve the problem of parking in the central part of the city by building an underground garage beneath the Sabac Victims’ Square, because, according to a survey by CESID and UNOPS, which was carried out with the support of the Swiss government and the Republic of Serbia, and which surveyed the citizens of Sabac, the problem of parking is where they expressed a great dissatisfaction, as pointed out by city representatives at the conference held with the new garage as the main topic.

Aleksandar Pajic, the mayor of Sabac, said that the survey had acted as a signal for the city to focus on the lack of parking spaces and to start working intensively on solving this long-standing problem.

– If we take into consideration that, to 100,000 citizens of legal age, we have 62,213 registered vehicles, and that, in Sabac, we have a total of 2,102 parking spaces, we can see that, for a further development of the city, primarily the infrastructure, it is necessary to solve the problem of parking spaces and the state of the traffic. We have engaged all the relevant companies in the city, we have contacted other local self-governments in the Republic of Serbia which are either in the process of solving the problem of parking or have already solved it, to share experiences that have been invaluable to us with them – said Pajic.

Pajic believes that the public-private partnership model would be good for solving the problem of parking in the central city zone.

– We are inviting all the interested private partners who want to invest their money in the underground garage in the Sabac Victims’ Square to send us letters of intent so that we would, based on all the relevant indicators, make the decision on investing in the new garage, which would have 350 to 400 parking space – added Pajic.

He assures that the procedure would be fully transparent and that they would inform the citizens about the steps taken every ten days or so. At one of the next City Assembly meetings, as added, the procedure will be launched for entering the public-private partnership and the decision on the forming of an expert team in this city will then be adopted.
