The memorandum of understanding in the field of application of nuclear energy development in Serbia was signed today in the Palace of Serbia between five ministries of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and 20 scientific and academic institutions and institutes, the government announced.

The memorandum was signed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Mining and Energy, the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education with Elektroprivreda Srbije, Elektromreza Srbije, the Institute of Nuclear Sciences Vinca, the Serbian Nuclear Society, the Directorate for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of Serbia and the faculties of economic, medical and technical sciences.

The prime minister of Serbia, Milos Vucevic, pointed out after signing the memorandum that that corrected the mistake made in the 1980s when the state banned the production of nuclear energy.

– No one has any doubts that the issue of electricity will be dominant and strategic, as well as that investment in this area will be a matter of sovereignty and independence of a country – Vucevic said.

The prime minister emphasized that it was about peacetime nuclear energy and asked that the issue not be politicized, and that the scientific community had been engaged because of it.

According to him, the issue of personnel in this area will be challenging and the Ministry of Education will work on it.

Vucevic added that it was possible to develop nuclear energy while protecting the environment and the health of the citizens of Serbia.

– I believe that this is a great chance for the development of Serbia. I expect you to work transparently and openly. I am proud that Serbia has such people and institutions – Vucevic said.

Recently, the Ministry of Mining and Energy opened the tender for the preparation of the preliminary technical study for the purpose of considering the peacetime use of nuclear energy in the Republic of Serbia, and the value of the job had been estimated at RSD 14.2 million. Bids may be sent by July 16.

– In the conditions of the growing needs for energy, planned in the next decades, supported by the accelerated electrification of the economy, with the increase of the share of renewable energy sources on the grid and the reduction of production from coal, nuclear energy needs to be considered as an equal option which could contribute to a stable supply of low-carbon electric energy, in addition to hydro energy and gas, which are considered transitional fuels – says the tendering documentation.

Let us remind that the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, announced recently that representatives of the French state energy company EDF, with whom she had talked, had expressed an interest in taking part in this procedure.

In April, the Government of Serbia signed the Memorandum of Understanding with EDF, whereby conditions were created for a strategic partnership in estimating the potential for the development of nuclear energy in Serbia.
