Even six years after urban planning contest, Cukarica Creek not attractive to yachtsmen

Six years from the contest for its development, the Cukarica Creek, instead of becoming “a magnet for yachtsmen throughout Europe”, is still a puddle. The organization “Beograd u pokretu” demands for it to be urgently developed, and its executive director, Nikola Radin, says for N1 that the creek gives off a very unpleasant smell, which comes form the river Topciderka that flows into it, whereas the sewage flows into the river.

Radin says that the design for the development of the Cukarica Creek that won in 2018 envisaged the development of embankments and the construction of a new marina.

– What needs to be done urgently is to regulate the drainage basin of the river Topciderka, which flows into the Sava here, and the water surface here has become one big disposal site due to the low water circulation. There is no need to emphasize that this is, above all, an ecological problem, and then also an aesthetic one – points out Radin.

The development of the Cukarica Creek, as well as the construction of a marina on the Sava, have been announced sporadically for over ten years. The construction of the Ada Ciganlija marina in the Cukarica Creek was planned back in 2008, and the investor in the project at the time was Parking Servis Beograd, which had initiated the process of the development of the coast of the Sava Lake and the Cukarica Creek.

In early 2016, the officials of the City of Belgrade announced that the plan was to look for a partner for the construction of a marina and to develop this part of the Sava bank.

In September 2018, the Belgrade-based company Novkol won first prize at the contest for the urban planning-architectural design for the development of the Cukarica Creek, who surface encompasses around 42.6 hectares, of which 20.8 hectares is the land, whereas around 21.8 hectares is the water surface. At the time, the Belgrade Land Development Public Agency said that the task was to prepare the urban planning-architectural design of the development of the bank, an embankment, areas for water sports and the water surface of the Cukarica Creek, as well as to get an estimated value of the works for the full development of the creek.
