Intermodal terminal in Batajnica opened - Serbia's transport capacity will increase at least eight-fold in the next 10 years

The opening of the intermodal terminal in Batajnica is the starting point of the Serbia's new path towards the European Union, said Oliver Varhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement.

As part of his visit to Serbia, Varhelyi, together with the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, visited the terminal for transshipment of containers with goods from railway wagons to trucks and vice versa. The terminal is also connected to river and air transport, and is financed in part by EU grants of EUR 13.8 million.

- That transport terminal represents a new approach, because it is a flexible transport terminal for both export and import, a light structure capable of growing as the trade grows - Varhelyi said.

He added that the EU forecasts Serbia's transport capacity to increase at least eight-fold in the next 10 years and that this terminal will be the main hub.

During the visit, Vesic said that the terminal, specialized in the transfer of consolidated cargo, by transferring cargo traffic from trucks to trains, enables the development of logistics in Serbia.

- This is not the biggest project we have done together with the EU, but it is significant because it promotes our economic growth. This is an infrastructure project that allows us to develop our logistics and thus use all the railways and roads we are building in Serbia in order to have better economic growth and for our transport and traffic to influence the further development of our economy - said Vesic.

He added that Serbia, not counting the last grant of EUR 610 million for the construction of a high-speed railroad to Nis, received EUR 550 million from the EU intended for the transport sector.

Minister for European Integration Tanja Miscevic and Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia Emanuele Giofre visited the terminal in which Serbia invested EUR 1.7 million, alongside Vesic and Varhelyi.

The intermodal terminal and logistics center complex covers 82 hectares between the Batajnica railway station and the E75 highway. That place was chosen because of its proximity to the Belgrade airport.

Trains from Serbia and European centers will arrive at the terminal with containers that will be reloaded, stored and transported by trucks to end users within a radius of hundreds of kilometers. The intermodal terminal has two transshipment tracks for containers and one additional one, roads for trucks, container storage, customs warehouse and other facilities.
