The agreement on the construction of internal traffic routes and the accompanying hydrotechnical, electrical and telecommunications installations within the complex of the Constantine the Great Airport was signed in Nis by the minister of transport, construction and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, the acting director of the Airports of Serbia, Mihajlo Zdravkovic, and the director of China Shandong International Economic & Technical Cooperation Group, Son Wu Jun.

Vesic said that the agreed works would cost EUR 16 million and that the Chinese company would have the obligation to finish them by July 1, when the passengers were planned to set off from the newly built building with terminals at the Nis Airport.

– Over EUR 10 million was invested in the terminal building, and the equipment will cost over 600 million. It has been ordered and will arrive in May, which is before the agreed deadline – stated Vesic.

Vesic announced new investments in the Nis Airport and said that there was reason for it, because Nis had had a record number of 488,312 passengers in 2023.

– With the construction of the rail bypass route around Nis, we will free the space for the extension of the runway by about 300 meters. We also have a new tower planned – said Vesic.

He said that more and more passengers were expected at the Nis Airport and added that there were talks with Air Serbia about the introduction of new lines.

The acting director of the Airports of Serbia, Mihajlo Zdravkovic, said that the agreement signed with the Chinese company entailed the development of 53,900 square meters of airport space, of the total of 80,000 square meters.

– Among other things, the agreement entails the construction of 1,976 meters of internal traffic routes. The capacity of the parking lot will be increased from the current 173 parking spaces to 580. Today, at the goods-customs terminal, it is possible to park 49 trucks at the same time, and after the new parking lot is built, there will be 103 spaces for trucks – stated Zdravkovic.

He said that, thanks to the signed agreement, the airport complex would be connected to the city collector network after 38 years of operations.

– The next phase of the construction entails the demolition of the old building with the terminals and the construction of a new building in that location, the extension of the runway, the construction of a taxiway and a new tower – pointed out Zdravkovic.

The director of Shandong International, Son Wu Jun, reminded that the company had worked in Serbia since 2011.

– With the help and support of the Government of Serbia and the Serbian society, and under the management of the Embassy of China, we have realized a range of infrastructure projects which have realized good results. The beginning of a new project like the Nis Airport indicates that the company and the Government of Serbia will realize good results in the future as well – said Son Wu Jun.

The mayor of Nis, Dragana Sotirovski, said that the signed agreement showed that the decision of the members of the City Assembly of Nis for the airport to become state-owned was excellent.

Sotirovski said that the investments of the state in the Nis Airport amounted to EUR 35 million, which, as she emphasized, are funds “unimaginable for the Nis city budget.”
