The hydro power plants of Elektroprivreda Srbija are continuing having excellent production rates in 2024 as well, and these days, a half of the produced electrical energy comes from the hydro sector, said Dusan Zivkovic, the acting director of EPS after visiting the HPP Ovcar Banja, which is marking its 70th anniversary.

Zivkovic pointed out that, in 2024, the HPPs of EPS had produced 2.3 million MWh, which is 38% more than planned and nearly 300,000 MWh more than in 2023, EPS says in a press release.

– Thanks to the readiness of all our generators, the hard work of our employees and the good hydrological conditions, last year broke the record when it comes to the production of electrical energy from hydro power plants. The plan was exceeded by over 40%, whereas the share of the hydro-green energy in the total production amounted to 36.5%. That is a result of the very well done revitalizations – explained the head of EPS and added:

– We are continuing with the revitalizations. We plan to complete the revitalization of the reversible HPP Bajina Basta in the next two years, and the revitalization of Vlasina HPPs, HPP Bistrica, HPP Potpec, as well as HPP Djerdap 2, is being prepared as well. The project documentation has been prepared for all those projects, and grants have also been approved for Vlasina and Bistrica through the Western Balkans Investment Framework, of 16 and 7.5 million euros respectively. The revitalization of the hydro capacities is our priority, because, in addition to reliability which lasts for decades, revitalization increases the power of the generators, which eventually leads to a greater capacity for the production of electrical energy from hydro potentials. Each produced green megawatt-hour is useful in multiple ways, not just for EPS, but for the whole society, citizens and economy of Serbia.

Zivkovic emphasized that the HPP Ovcar Banja and the HPP Medjuvrsje were pioneers of the hydro sector of EPS, the first hydro power plants built after the Second World War, and that they remained very reliable and efficient, achieving great results.

Petar Domanovic, the director of the HPP Elektromorava, presented the history and the very good results in 2023. The annual production plan was exceeded by 22%, and a daily production record of 411,913 kWh was achieved. He announced the reconstruction of the hydromechanical equipment which would lead to an increase in the production rate in the next years.
