The PUE Belgrade Waterworks and Sewer has filed to the competent ministry the request for deciding on the necessity of the preparation of the environmental impact assessment study of the project of the construction of the new facility for the processing of drinkable water Makis 3.

The location of the planned expansion of the capacities of the complex of the facility for the processing of water (PPV) Makis 3 is in the existing complex of the Makis facility, where the processing lines Makis 1, Makis 2 and Jezero have already been built, within the borders of the Detailed Regulation Plan of Ada Ciganlija, around 130 meters from Lake Sava.

The parcels on which the facility in the cadaster municipality Cukarica is to be built are 12632/1, 12632/2, 11771/3, 11771/5, 11771/6, 11771/7 and 11771/11, which currently feature areas for sports and recreation activities on the land and commercial activities to a lesser extent.

The request, which was prepared by ECOlogica URBO doo from Kragujevac, points out that the purpose of the space is in line with the purpose of the land in the current planning document and that the Makis 3 project is “possible and ecologically acceptable.”

The document also says that the current capacity of the Makis complex is around 3600 liters per second and that it is conditioned by numerous factors, such as the shutting down of the Jezero facility due to the necessary reconstruction, the insufficient capacity of the facility for the distribution of the processed water etc.

The Makis complex will have a total capacity of 5000 l/s (Makis 1 and Makis 2 2 x 1000 l/s and Jezero 2 x 500 l/s), only after the completion of the reconstruction of the chemical facility, the production facility Jezero, the new clean water pumping station Makis, the discharge pipeline to the Bezanija reservoir and the treatment of the technological waste waters and filter washing waters – the request says.

After the planned construction of Makis 3, it is added, the complex will have a total capacity of 7000 l/s of drinkable water.

The project also plans the construction of the new clean water pumping station Makis with a capacity of 7000 l/s and the new processing line Makis 3 with a capacity of 2000 l/s.

In the first phase of the realization of the project, the plan is to build the new processing line Makis 3.

It is pointed out that the technological process of filtering the surface water to produce drinkable water is the same on all the technological lines of the Makis complex, except that there will be certain upgrades and extensions of the existing devices in Makis 3, so, for example, three chambers will be used for the ozonization of the water, instead of two like in the rest of the facility.

The project encompasses the following facilities within the facility for the processing of drinkable water Makis 3: a separation chamber, pre-ozonization and fining, the main ozonization, a pump station for washing, double layer PA filters, GAU filters, a compressor facility, UV disinfection, a clear water reservoir, a laboratory, a chemical facility and a new pre-settling pond.

If needed, the document says, the future processing line Makis 4 will also be connected to the new separation chamber.

Let us remind that the construction of Makis 3 has been announced on several occasions in the past years. Three years ago, the then deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, announced the designing of a new water factory within the Makis complex, which, as he said, “should bring a new 5,000 liters per second, whereby we would secure Belgrade for the next 20 to 30 years.”

The construction of Makis 3 has also been mentioned in the context of the solving of the problem of the water supply of Lazarevac, so in early 2022, while visiting the construction of three Ranney wells in Vreoci, Vesic said that it would “fully solve the issue of water supply in Lazarevac in the parts where there have been problems, but the future of Lazarevac certainly lies in being connected to the planned water factory Makis 3.”
