You can now be feted the way Emperor Haile Selassie was!
(Tito and Sophia Loren)
During the stay on the Brionian Islands, Tito was often the host of statesmen and politicians, as well as movie divas since he was a passionate filmophile. One of his most frequent guests was Sophia Loren, accompanied by her husband Carlo Ponti.
Sophia Loren differed from other guests because of her simplicity and closeness with the personnel. Her beauty drew the attention of all guests, even the president's.
On the occasion of the third visit of Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti in 1974, Josip and Jovanka Broz hosted a farewell lunch at White Palace.
- She was a beautiful simple woman, a great actress and an excellent cook. When she was preparing some of her specialties, Tito was often her main helper. She was delighted with Tito's Ruzica wine from the Brionian Islands and our food - says Ivan Cosic, one of the authors of the book Titov Kuvar (Tito's Cookbook).
For this movie diva, Tito's chefs used to prepare smoked ham from Istra, pheasant soup, Macaroni a la Sophia Loren, veal backstrap with champignons, red cabbage, and apricot ice-cream for dessert.Mr. Cosic also says that the book Titov Kuvar was created to demystify the stories about how celebrities behave in the natural ambience, during their meals, as well as to describe the time through authentic events and people, with the original menus specially prepared for such occasions.
- Most recipes can also be used today and these dishes can be prepared in every classical and modern kitchen. However, we must bear in mind that it is very important that the dishes are tasty, attractive, decoratively served, in order to show the role and skills of the host - Mr. Cosic explains for eKapija.
(Ivan Cosic)
Guided by the idea to make a presentation of the original menus from the book Titov Kuvar, Ivan Cosic has chosen the ship-restaurant Bahus on the Danube as the host.
- Bahus is an exceptionally interesting facility and it can meet all the specific requests - Cosic explains while carefully turning the pages of the "blue book" with 400 menus.
As he says, the idea is to make it possible for a guest to come to the restaurant and order, for example, the specialties that used to be served to Emperor Haile Selassie at the Old Palace.
- Those were all intimate lunches, which is why Bahus is ideal since it has several different levels that all create a pleasant feeling and atmosphere. It will be an opportunity to "sail into royal feasts, the palaces and villas of wealthy men worldwide", at least for a while.
Emperor Haile Selassie was a highly appreciated friend of Tito's. He enjoyed the best treatment at both White Palace and on the Brionian Islands.
(Bahus restaurant)The new menu at that restaurant in Belgrade will be a real refreshment for the tourist offer of the capital.
The only thing the guests need to do is decide whose skin they want to "wear", and the rest is the staff's care.- I would like my friends and me to be feted as Kirk Douglas or Winston Churchill. I kindly ask you that the menu includes the same dishes that were served during Tito's visit to Gaddafi or on the occasion of the formal dinner organized for our president by Kennedy - this should be enough for the start.
Creative recipes, carefully selected ingredients, specially prepared meals, decorative serving and fine service will be a good invitation not only for domestic tourists, but also for all guests from former Yugoslavia.
The Leskovac grilled meat for Queen of England
(Tito and Queen of England)
On the Brionian Islands, Dragan and Bure, chefs from Leskovac, were preparing grilled meat directly in front of Queen of England. Although it was not in line with the royal protocol, she stood up, delighted, and congratulated the chefs. The queen also ate vine rolls, young cheese, milk cream, homemade bread, grilled minced meat, grilled strips of pork loin meat, homemade sausage, etc.
She was also delighted with the tea party hosted by Jovanka Broz.
- We prepared several kinds of tea and cookies for her. The tea was served in a special tea set made of royal silver. We wore custom-made uniforms specially sewn for that occasion. We were doing our best to show how rich the culture and food of our country are.
