Austrian Ship Collides with Bridge Column Near Backa Palanka – Barge Carrying Thousand Tons of Artificial Fertilizer Sinks

The Austrian ship “Antonia”, which was towing a barge carrying a thousand tons of artificial fertilizer, collided with a load-bearing column of the bridge on the Backa Palanka-Ilok border crossing around 1am on Friday, which is why the traffic on that border crossing has been stopped entirely, RTV learns.

In addition to the police, the fire service arrived to the site as well, because the first call said that the ship had sunk, but it is only the barge that has ended up on the bottom of the Danube.

So far, it is not known how the enormous amount of artificial fertilizer in the water will affect the environment.

An investigation will determine why the collision with the bridge occurred.
