The construction of the Thermal Power Plant Kostolac B3 is close to completion. The testing of the boiler, the mechanical turning of the turbine and the generators has been carried out and the final processes of testing and the synchronization of the block with the power grid now remains to be done, stated Dusan Zivkovic, the acting CEO of Elektroprivreda Srbije, at the official opening of the 10th International Conference “Power Plants 2023”, which is held on Zlatibor from November 8 through 10.

– We are soon looking at the revitalization of the Vlasina HPPs and the HPP Djerdap 2. We will thereby create the conditions for the hydro sector to work without a problem and contribute to the share of RES in our energy mix – Zivkovic added.

He emphasized that, within the revitalization of the pride of the Serbia energy sector, the HPP Djerdap 1, the final revitalized generator had been put into operation, which would be tested for the next three days. After that, A3 remains connected to the grid.

At the conference, Zivkovic pointed out that JSC EPS had clear plans for future development and new projects which should contribute to the energy independence of Serbia through a secure, reliable and quality supply of electrical energy to the citizens and the economy. As he said, there are intensive plans for investments in new capacities, and especially in RES. Energy transition is our reality and every day there is an increasing number of new participants in the energy market from the private sector, but state companies are also participating in that process more and more actively, Zivokovic said.

– A greater share of RES requires balancing and we will respond to those requirements by building the Reversible Hydro Power Plant Bistirca, with a power of 656 MW. It will enable the balancing of 2,000 megawatts from new production capacities, primarily wind and solar power plants. EPS is continuing the realization of projects, such as the wind farm Kostolac of 66 MW and the solar power plant Petka, with close to 10 MW – Zivkovic said at the conference, which is organized by the Society of Thermal Engineers of Serbia.

He assessed that the green way would create the conditions for improving the security of supply in Serbia through diversification.

– The state should rely on local resources and institutions which have proven themselves in the past period through the establishment of a functional power system in the country and abroad, and even now there are efforts toward the construction of new facilities and the modernization of the existing ones – said professor Predrag Stefanovic, PhD, the president of the Society of Thermal Engineers of Serbia.

On the first day of the “Power Plants 2023” conference, introductory lectures were held. Aleksandar Jakovljevic, the director of the Sector for Strategy at EPS, talked about the position of electrical energy companies in the energy transition, whereas Dragan Belonic, the director of the HPP Djerdap 1, presented the project of the revitalization of this hydro power plant. Charters were handed out to the Serbian Committee of the World Energy Council and Elektroprivreda Srbije, EPS announced.
