Gas Station Owners: New Fuel Price Increase Should Be Expected Next Friday Due to Higher Excise Taxes

Fuel prices in Serbia should be expected to increase next week as well due to the increase of the excise taxes by 8% from October 1, gas stations owners stated for the Beta news agency.

According to the gas station owner Nebojsa Atanackovic, fuel vendors cannot say with certainty at the moment whether a part of the increased excise tax has already been calculated in the price of diesel fuel, which increased three dinars last Friday, September 29, or whether that was only down to the increase in the price of crude oil, but it is certain that the price has not yet increased by the full amount of the increased excise tax.

– The excise tax is paid by the producer or the importer and they will have to pay that type of tax to the state from October 1, when the Decree on the Increase of Excise Taxes starts applying. So far, we don’t know whether the diesel fuel price increase by three dinars last Friday was caused by the increase in the price of crude oil or the excise tax, because only the producers and the importers know at which price they procured the oil, but it is likely that Europe does not have enough oil and that the price is growing – Atanackovic said.

The Government of Serbia adopted the Decree on the Increase of Excise Taxes by 8% on oil products, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and coffee, which came into effect yesterday. On Friday, September 29, the price of diesel fuel in Serbia increased three dinars and costs RSD 214 instead of RSD 211 per liter, and petrol is cheaper by one dinar and costs RSD 191 instead of RSD 192.

Atanackovic said that the price of diesel fuel, due to the excise tax increase by 8%, should be higher by RSD 4.8, and of petrol by RSD 4.6, and when the VAT is added to it, diesel fuel should be more expensive by slightly under six dinars, whereas petrol should be more expensive by slightly over five dinars, on that basis alone.

He added that, ultimately, the cost would be paid by the consumers through the retail price because the producer or the importer would certainly include it in the price and that it was just a matter of time.

The owner of the Avia gas stations, Jelena Radun, also estimated that the price increase from the previous Friday had not included the full excise tax increase and that this could be expected to happen the next week.
