New Terminal Building at Constantine the Great Airport to Be Available for Use from Next Summer – Capacity to Increase to 1.5 Million Passengers

The new terminal building at the Constantine the Great Airport in Nis should be completed by the end of November in terms of construction, after which it will be equipped, and passengers are expected to be able to start using it from the next summer season, stated the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic.

While visiting the site, he said that the Nis Airport deserved to get a new building, considering that it had more and more passengers, and reminded that 13 lines operated from Nis at that moment, three of them seasonal and nine regular ones.

He said that, in 2023, the Nis Airport would surpass the record from 2019, when it had 422,000 passengers, and pointed out that the airport was designed for around 1.5 million passengers, which means that Nis is becoming an increasingly important passenger and cargo hub for air traffic.

– We will have more and more passengers and this airport will develop. I expect the construction works to be completed by the end of November and I want us to try to enable the citizens of Nis, as well as those who fly from this airport, to use the new airport building by the summer season – Vesic said, as announced on the website of the ministry.

That will take a lot of work, which, he added, entails the completion and the equipping of the building and a full landscaping.

– We are also looking at the construction of a new tower and the reconstruction of the old building or the construction of a new one. In any case, we are looking at an increase of the capacity of the Nis Airport up to 1.5 million passengers and that is the best news for Nis. Nis is getting a fast railroad, a new airport building, more air lines and thereby develops, and we are making it a better place for living for all people – Vesic said.

The director of the PE Airports of Serbia, Mihajlo Zdravkovic, said that “this was a record summer season at the Nis Airport, because we had over 50,000 passengers in July and August, which has not been recorded in the history of this airport.”

He said that the biggest complaints made by the passengers had to do with the lack of comfort and commercial features at the airport.

– The construction of this building will create much better conditions for our passengers, a greater comfort and more possibilities for commercial features and we expect to thereby attract new passengers as well, which we hope would get new airline companies interested to expand the range of destinations from our airport – Zdravkovic said.
