The traffic of Air Serbia from the Belgrade Airport in line with the planned flight schedule is still extremely hampered due to the slowed down operations and insufficient capacities of certain airport services, the company announced. Combined with the other factors that are specific to the current summer season, it leads to frequent phase-based delays, and even the consequent cancellation of Air Serbia’s flights from the Belgrade Airport.

– Although the lack of staff in key positions was defined as one of the biggest risks six months ago in the document which dealt with the level of preparedness for the summer season, it is obvious that the problem has not been solved in the meantime. At the joint meetings which preceded the current summer season, representatives of Air Serbia regularly and thoroughly notified the representatives of the company Belgrade Airport about all the plans of the Serbian national airline carrier, the increased number of destinations, the expansion of the fleet and the as-of-yet-unrecorded increase in the number of passengers, for which there were adequate projections already then – the announcement says.

As added, “there is a whole range of problems that Air Serbia has been facing for weeks now on a daily level at the Belgrade Airport, which have very serious consequences on the regularity of traffic and which are only deepening with each day. In the past days, the situation at the airport has been increasingly going out of control, which doesn’t only refer to the delays and cancellations due to the malfunction on the X-ray device for luggage control on Thursday, June 22. That was only one incident, and the problem of the functioning of the airport services is far bigger than that and is chronic in nature.”

They also say that the passenger handling process has been extremely slowed down.

– The agents working at the check-in counters are insufficiently trained and the process takes longer than is standard. The baggage carousel stops working very frequently, leading to the forming of long queues in front of the check-in counters. Due to than, the flights are closed for departure too late and are delayed, the passengers complain with good reasons, and the baggage is often delayed at the airport and has to be sent to the passengers later on. The so-called “drop off” counters for handing over the baggage of the already checked-in passengers are frequently out of order as well. The staff for loading the baggage on the plane is often late and there are not enough people. In the evening hours, there is a lack of employees in all support services, and passengers often have to wait even for the agents at the boarding gates.

Air Serbia points out that there are even problems with the arriving flights, “when the passengers, due to the insufficient number of employees for the unloading of the baggage and in the sorting area, often have to wait for the baggage longer than the flight itself lasted.”

– When it comes to the delayed baggage, it piles up at a great speed, it is impossible to get feedback on the status of the baggage, and the existing employees do not even manage to list it, let alone send it to the passengers. It is obvious that there are problems with the equipment and the infrastructure and that the chain lacks trained people at every step – they say.

The press release says that Air Serbia fully understands the justified dissatisfaction of the passengers and apologizes to all those whose flights in the past several weeks have been delayed or cancelled.

– At the same time, the Serbian national airline carrier demands from the company Belgrade Airport, which manages the Belgrade Airport, to responsibly accept its obligations, to react to all said problems in the shortest amount of time and to create the necessary conditions for a regular traffic to the interest of both companies and our passengers – it is concluded.
