Serbia Getting Only 3% Electrical Energy from Wind – Huge Potentials, Auctions Good News

Studies show that the calculated wind power in the windiest area of Serbia is comparable to that of Europe, but at the moment, only 3% of the electrical energy is produced from wind power – said the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic at the marking of the Global Wind Day, June 15, at the Wind Farm Alibunar.

– Still, we recently broke a small new record. For the first time, we were among the top 10 countries in Europe, with an 11% share in production from wind on a daily level in the national mix, thanks to the operations of 8 wind farms in Serbia with a capacity of 400 MW, in which EUR 730 million was invested – the minister said at the gathering which was organized on the occasion of the Global Wind Day by the RES Serbia association.

Djedovic reminded that the Government of Serbia and the Ministry of Mining and Energy had launched auctions for the allocation of market premiums for RES, which would result in 450 new green megawatts, and, in the next three years, 1,300 MW.

– We believe that the auctions would incite a new large investment cycle. We base our optimism on the fact that there are prepared wind farm projects with a capacity of more than 1,000 MW – Djedovic said.



Emmanuel Van Vyve, the director of Business Development at the company Elicio, reminded that the wind farm in Alibunar had operated for five years and that EUR 90 million had been invested in it. As he pointed out, the wind farm is an excellent investment, and the company is already planning next projects in Serbia.

– We welcomed with great pleasure the news about the auctions for the allocation of market premiums for RES that the government had launched and they are a good indicator of the further development of the sector. We will continue with new projects in Serbia, and the wind farm in Pancevo is next – stated Van Vyve.

The manager of RES Serbia, Danijela Isailovic, pointed out that the wind farm with a power of 42 MW produced electrical energy for 43,000 households.

– There are eight wind farms with a total power of 398 MW in Serbia. The founders of the RES Serbia Association (wind farms Alibunar, Kovacica and Cibuk 1) have built 312 MW, that is, more than 80% of wind farms in Serbia, investing more than EUR 600 million. They all give 2% of the profit to the local self-governments, along with the regular taxes and other fees – Isailovic pointed out and added that wind energy comprised around 16% of the production of electrical energy in Europe.

How wind farms work – One costs EUR 2 million

The event was attended by the ambassador of Belgium to Serbia, Cathy Buggenhout, representatives of local and provincial authorities, numerous companies, as well as pupils from three elementary schools from Alibunar, Banatski Karlovci and Vladimirci. The pupils were the most interested in how the wind farms worked, how tall they were, but also how much they cost.



The maintenance technician at the Alibunar Wind Farm, Igor Milutinov, explained to them that each turbine had a foundation 13 meters deep, that each turbine was 100 meters tall and that it produced 2 MW of green electrical energy per hour.

– The turbines are fully automated, they can be switched on through an app on the phone or the computer. If you went by foot to the top of the turbine, it would take 25 minutes, but each one has an elevator which takes 4 to 5 minutes to reach the top. The minimum required wind speed allowing the turbine to work is 3.1 m/s, and the maximum one is 20 m/s. It takes less than a month to build a wind turbine, and each one costs EUR 2 million – said Milutinov.
