Thanks to the co-financing of the EU, the new capacities and the highly sophisticated equipment will enable the strengthening of the science potential of the Institute and its transformation into a European Center of Excellence, capable of carrying out the most advanced projects, applicable on a global level, the EU Delegation to Serbia announced.
– BioSense shows that agriculture and biotechnology are an essential sector of our everyday life. With the new way of innovations, we can better connect science with innovations and education, all this through the Center of Excellence, the leadership role and talent – Commissioner Gabriel said at the opening.
Featuring special anti-vibration characteristics, this is the first building of its kind ever built in Serbia, which enables the application of highly sensitive equipment for the development of sensors, micro and nano technologies. BioSense is the only European Center of Excellence outside the EU, pointed out Prime Minister Brnabic.
– Digital agriculture is a synergy between technology and agriculture, which is what’s necessary in the era of climate challenges, so that we would make sure that the agriculture is sustainable, that it is producing better results and that we, as a state, with the help of science and science institutes, are giving adequate support to our agriculturists, so that they would be competitive in the future – Brnabic stated.
The EU finances BioSense Institute through ANTARES Project with a grant worth EUR 14 million from the program titled “Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation” within Horizon 2020. The Government of Serbia contributed another EUR 20 million, partially secured through a loan from the European Investment Bank of EUR 18 million. This amount is intended for the development of the research infrastructure, such as the new Institute building and state-of-the-art research equipment.
Director of BioSense Institute Vladimir Crnojevic assessed that the opening of the new building represented a new era of scientific and research work in Serbia, which was now in full swing.
This building is one of the most technologically complex buildings in Serbia and the first in Europe with a special anti-vibration core solution that is resistant to vibrations.
The next step in digital development is the construction of the Bio4 institute in Belgrade, which represents a multidisciplinary project in the wider region, the government announced.
