Driving Down Highways Through Serbia and North Macedonia Without Stopping to Purchase Electronic Charging System Soon to Be Possible

In the presence of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Prime Minister of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski, three documents were signed in Belgrade on Friday that will improve cooperation between the two countries in the fields of transport, mining and energy.

The documents are:

– The Memorandum of Understanding on measures to improve the movement of people and goods across the common state border;
– The Memorandum of Understanding in the field of mining and energy and
– The Memorandum of Understanding for the electronic fee collection project - establishing an interoperable electronic fee collection (EFC) system, according to the website of the Government of Serbia.

Brnabic explained that, when it comes to the establishment of this system, citizens will soon be able to travel on highways in Serbia, as well as in North Macedonia, without making stops to purchase an electric charging system in one or another country.

She stated that in the next 30 days, discussions will continue regarding the harmonization of interoperable electronic fee collection, as well as that an additional 60 days are planned for testing this system and putting it into operation during the summer season.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that the system will expand to Albania, within the Open Balkan Initiative, but also to Croatia and Greece, in order to facilitate travel as much as possible, but also for “Serbia to become even more attractive for the transport of goods, which directly contributes to the economic growth and the GDP growth of our country.”

The Prime Minister also emphasized that cooperation in the field of energy is very important for the economic relations of the two countries, adding that the memorandum concerns primarily the gas interconnector between Serbia and North Macedonia.

According to her, this will contribute to the improvement of cooperation in this field to the end of ensuring regional security and energy stability.

Regarding the improvement of the movement of people and goods across the common state border, Brnabic said that a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed today for the improvement and better cooperation at the border crossings between the two countries, primarily at the Presevo-Tabanovce border crossing.

– We talked about how we can further improve it, especially during the tourist season, and already during the next week we will have additional meetings at the technical level – she said.

The Prime Minister explained that the unique software for checking data at border crossings and mobile readers will be discussed at those meetings in order to reduce congestion at border crossings as much as possible.
