Exhibition of handmade Wittmann furniture in Kompresor hall in Belgrade until March 31
An exhibition of handmade Wittmann furniture was opened last night in Lower Dorcol in Belgrade. On that occasion, the exhibition hall Kompresor hosted numerous lovers of designed and unique pieces of furniture.
Vesna Jecmenica, the Director of the company Nitea, Wittmann's agent for the territory of Serbia and Montenegro, stated that Nitea was cooperating with the Austrian company for a long time and that Wittmann had never before organized a presentation of it's furniture in Serbia.
- We are of the opinion that our market is interesting and that it can understand such design and quality. This furniture is intended for apartments, houses, hotels, as well as office space. Each piece is made by hand at Wittmann's factory. Carpenters, modelers, upholsterers and tailors together participate in the making of furniture. Wittmann makes it possible for buyers to watch the final phase of making of the selected armchair, chair, sofa or bed - said Ms. Jecmenica.
Centennial tradition of high-quality furniture
Wittmann was founded in 1896 as a saddlery and this family business gradually began to specialize in the production of high-quality upholstered furniture. Today, Heinz Hofer-Wittmann and his wife Ulrike Wittmann are the fourth generation that runs the family business.
Wittmann has renewed the production of the furniture designed by Josef Hoffmann, one of the most important furniture and interior designers of the 20th century. Josef Hoffmann was born in 1870. He studied architecture and started teaching at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna as early as at the age of 29. With the artist Koloman Moser he established the Wiener Werkstatte in 1903, which was an association of artists and artisans who wanted to offer top-quality modern and functional items for everyday use to the market. The building Palais Stoclet in Brussels (1905-1911) is Hoffmann's most important work. A curiosity is that Hoffmann designed the interior of Gustav Klimt's studio. As one of the founders of Vienna Secession, he had a significant influence on art and architecture in the first half of the 20th century. His sophisticated and elegant design is still modern and appealing. The armchair KUBUS was made in 1910 and it is still part of Wittmann's product portfolio.
Frederick Kiesler
Another Wittmann's contribution to the preservation of Austrian design heritage is the renewal of the production of the furniture designed by Frederick Kiesler. According to many critics, Frederick Kiesler was far ahead of his time, both as an architect and a designer. He was also writing critiques and essays on architecture and art and was a furniture designer. The pieces of furniture he designed are remembered for their unusual and intriguing look. Everything he did he approached in an interdisciplinary way, not for the sake of mixing various forms, but to create a corelation between art, science, psychology and philosophy. The renewal of the production of Kiesler's furniture has been made possible thanks to the cooperation between Wittmann and the Kiesler Foundation in Vienna.
Wittmann wines
In addition to furniture, Wittmann also makes wines. The company has a 6-hectare vineyard where it grows Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. The affection for details is also expressed in the production of "divine drink". With Wittmann, one can completely indulge in the enjoyment that is pleasant for both eye and soul.
The list of designers Wittmann collaborates with includes world-famous names such as Paolo Piva, Matteo Thun, Andreas
Weber, POLKA, SODA designers, and others.
The exhibition will be open until March 31.
