Flash Furnace Put into Operation at Reconstructed Serbia Zijin Copper Smelter in Bor, Expected Value of Annual Production Over USD 2 Billion

At the reconstructed smelter of Serbia Zijin Copper in Bor, the flash furnace has been put into operation, which is the pre-condition for putting into operation the Copper Smelter, where the copper concentrate will be melted in line with international standards from now on.

– Instead of mazut, coal, and other highly polluting fuels, the reconstructed smelter will use clean natural gas, so the concentration of powdery substances will not exceed five milligrams per normal cubic meter, which is in line with the EU environmental standards – the general manager of Serbia Zijin Copper, Jian Ximing, said on that occasion.

As Ximing added, “waste industrial waters will be treated and reused in the production process, and the total carbon emission will be reduced to 0.62 tons of carbon-dioxide per ton of produced cathode carbon,” according to the website of the Ministry of Mining and Energy of Serbia.

The project of the technical reconstruction, expansion and construction of the TIR smelting and refining facility took two and a half years and, according to Ximing, USD 320 million was invested in it, of which USD 100 million was invested in environmental protection systems.

– When the smelted starts working, we will produce 180,000 to 200,000 tons of cathode copper of high purity each year, around 3 tons of gold and 700,000 tons of sulfuric acid. The value of the annual production will exceed USD 2 billion – said Jian Ximing.
