The construction of the first waste water treatment facility in Belgrade begins this year. A total of five such facilities are planned in the capital of Serbia.

The first factory, in Veliko Selo, will also be the biggest one and cover the needs of 1.3 million people.

The minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, says that his biggest professional wish is for the sewer system in the capital of Serbia to be improved in 2023.

– I am very happy that the ministry is dealing with the “Clean Serbia” project. That is EUR 3.5 billion for the construction of around 5 million meters of sewer in over 70 municipalities, as well as waster water treatment facilities. Those projects will secure sewer for around 2.5 million people – Vesic says.

According to him, in Belgrade, there are around a hundred direct outlets of sewage into the Sava and the Danube and fecal sewage equivalent to 60,000 Olympic-sized pools is poured there each year.

Vesic explained that 10% of those outlets would be removed once the factory in Veliko Selo was put into operation. He believes that this will revolutionize Belgrade.

He said that around EUR 280 million would be required for the first phase of the construction of the factory, whereas, for the second phase, negotiated with partners from France and the EU at that moment, would require EUR 400 to 650 million.

– That is a historic investment for Belgrade and I believe that the construction of the second biggest waste water treatment facility n Batajnica, which entails the construction of a sewer system for Batajnica and the surrounding settlements, Altina, Surcin and others, worth around EUR 200 million, will start soon as well – the minister said.

He added that those two facilities would solve over 90% of all sewer-related problems in Belgrade.
