Torlak to Get New Diagnostic-Research Facility with Laboratory of Third-Degree Biological Safety

The Ministry of Health plans to realize, within the “Urgent Response of the Republic of Serbia to COVID-19” project, the project of the construction of a new diagnostic-research facility with a third-degree biological safety laboratory within the Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera “Torlak”.

A microbiology laboratory of the third degree of biological safety has not existed so far in Serbia. Within the new building of the diagnostics lab, which will have four floors and a total area of around 3,000 m2, the operations of one such lab will be organized, in line with international demands, and primarily in line with the Laboratory Biosafety Manual of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The new building will be raised in Belgrade, within the existing Torlak Institute, at 458 Vojvode Stepe Street, on the cadaster parcel 1554/2 in the cadaster municipality of Kumodraz in Belgrade.

– Considering that this project is financed with the proceeds from the loan of the World Bank, the standards and the stipulations determined in the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) of the World Bank need to be fully complied with, that is, it is necessary to carry out a detailed estimate of the project’s impact on the environment and the society and prepare the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), including the preparation of the Environment and Social Management Plan (ESMP) – it is said.
