Konzum, Mercator and Delta not even close to top 25 global market chains
Even with the overall results achieved by 16 members of the National Market Chain (NTL), ten largest market chains in Croatia, ranked by revenue, together registered a revenue of HRK 37.3 billion or USD 6.7 billion in 2009. With such results, Croatian traders are not even close to their global competitors.
Namely, the last on the list of top 25 market chains, French Intermarche (ITM), registered 25 billion dollars worth of revenue last year. U.S. Wal-Mart with a revenue of 405 billion dollars is far above all other competitors since the revenue of the second-ranked - French Carrefour, amounted to 120 billion dollars in 2009.
In spite of how powerful it may seem on local level, Croatia's largest market chain Konzum with the last year's revenue of HRK 12.58 billion is almost insignificant to international competitors. The same goes for even the largest market chains in the region.
Slovenian Mercator registered a revenue of 2.64 billion euros in seven market, Serbian Delta's revenue in five markets amounted to 2.05 billion euros, while Todoric's market chain registered 2.35 million worth of revenue in three markets. Allegedly, Mercator is going to take over 22 markets in the region from Mirko Tus, while Delta's owner Miroslav Miskovic has recently sold 51% stake to Belgian Delhaiz for 800 million euros, even though he asked to be paid EUR 1 billion. Todoric opened 40 markets in Croatia in 2010 and increased the size of his markets by 8,277 square meters, reaching 282,834 square meters of retail space.
