The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Serbia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have awarded acknowledgments to the most successful innovators who carried out, in practice, solutions for the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), making towns and municipalities in Serbia more resilient to climate change.

The total value of the funds invested by the awarded teams in the realization of innovative solutions and the co-financing secured by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Ministry of Environmental Protection amount to around USD 11 million.

These solutions were realized thanks to the support of the GEF, and they will contribute to a reduction of GHG emissions equivalent to half a million tons of CO2, which is equal to the forestation of 145 football stadiums, that is, the planting of 115,000 trees. Acknowledgments were also awarded to 11 teams of innovators from the public, private, NGO and research sectors, as well as 6 local self-governments.

The implementation of innovative solutions in practice contributes to the increase of energy efficiency of the central heating system, the increase of the share of renewable energy sources (biomass, biogas and solar energy) in the total energy mix, digitization and resource savings in agricultural production, the use of waste in getting new products, fertilizer and energy, the implementation of circular business models, the promotion of a sustainable traffic model, air filtering in urban environments, as well as an early warning and prevention of forest fires. Also, 35 new green jobs were created, the press release says.
