Basta: Nuclear Power Plants Only Way to Energy Stability, American Technology Required

The director of the PUE Beogradske elektrane, Rade Basta, expressed his conviction that “nuclear energy is the only way of achieving energy efficiency and energy stability in Serbia”.

In an interview for the new issue of the Novi Magazin weekly, Basta said that he invited American companies TerraPower and Exelon Corporation to build the first nuclear power plant in Serbia.

– The technologies implemented by these two American companies have the most favorable prices and provide maximum security. They offer to have a facility with a capacity of 350, up to 500 MW, with the kind of possibility of storing energy and the kind of security that haven’t existed in nuclear facilities so far, built over a period of seven years and then commissioned – Basta said.

He emphasized that “modular nuclear power plants have been the best solution as a technological innovation so far and they feature a range of advantages, produce less radioactive waste material, are more efficient and can be connected to each power grid much more easily”.

According to him, the presence of Russia in the energy sector in big in Serbia and “as a future member of the European Union (EU), it should make partnerships with the USA and the EU for the purpose of establishing energy safety and security”.

– It is therefore very important for the nuclear facility project to feature American technology, as well as the education of our future staff – Basta said.
