The Romanian operator of nuclear power plants, the state company Nuclearelectrica, and the American nuclear technology company NuScale have announced that the first small modular reactor (SMR) will be set up in Romania by 2030.

The small modular nuclear power plant, a model which is also discussed in Serbia as a solution for the production of electrical energy, will be installed in the former Thermal Power Plant Doicesti, as reported by Romanian media.

A sum of USD 1.2 million, provided by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), was spent just for the examination of the location for the setting up of the nuclear power plant.

The Romanians are planning to set up the NuScale 6 module, with a power of 462 MW, whereby they would reduce CO2 emissions by four million tons a year.

This will be the first small modular nuclear reactor in Europe.
