Novi Sad Civilian Airport in Cenej, Not Near Sajkas After All? – Passenger Aircraft Planned in Vrsac and Subotica Too

According to citations from the Regional Spatial Plan of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina for 2021-2035, which is up for a public review, civilian airports of a general type are planned in Cenej, near Novi Sad, Vrsac and Subotica.

Said airports are planned as “hubs in the regional system of airports, primarily for passenger traffic (charter flights) of smaller airline carriers”.

Let us remind that, according to the Spatial Plan of Serbia, a higher-instance document which was put up for a public review last year, the construction of the Novi Sad airport is planned in another location, around 15 km southeast from the largest city of Vojvodina, in close proximity to the A1 highway, on the Kovilj – Sajkas – Budisava stretch. However, when asked by eKapija why Sajkas has been selected instead of Cenej, the ministry said at the time that “the exact location of the airport would be determined in the further preparation of the planning and technical documentation”.

According to the plan, in the light of the repurposing/restructuring of military airports (Sombor, Bela Crkva), under the management of the Ministry of Defense, it is necessary to plan these air terminals in the network of potentially effective airports of a mixed (general/sports) purpose.

The planned network of the facilities of air transport are complemented by sports airports/flying sites: Zrenjanin (Ecka), Kikinda (Drakslerov Salas), Pancevo (Utva), Sremska Mitrovica (Veliki Radinci), Bela Crkva (Cesko Selo), Kovin, Becej (Fantast), Novi Becej (Bocar), Ruma, as well as airports “in other location in which there are possibilities, the interest and the economic feasibility for it”.

The positions of these airports are also very important from the aspect of the current and future tourist and business offer of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, considering the proximity of attractive natural, tourism locations and settlements, and they can be included in the regional offer, the documentation says.

The priorities and the strategic-development projects of the first stage of the execution of the plan are:

– the forming of the Novi Sad – Cenej civilian airport;
– the reconstruction/construction of the Vrsac airport;

The strategic priorities after 2025 are:

– The reconstruction/construction of the Pancevo airport;
– The reconstruction/construction of the Zrenjanin (Ecka) airport.
