The border checkpoint Backi Breg opened in 2005, but, according to the project, the condition of the traffic routes is unsatisfactory and it is of insufficient width, and the number of traffic lanes and their flow rate are insufficient as well due to the high traffic frequency.
This checkpoint is currently used only by passenger cars and smaller trucks, and after more lanes are built, it will become available to larger freight vehicles as well.
The planned number of entrance/exit lanes is 1 for freight vehicles (entrance to the country), 2+2 for passenger vehicles and buses (entrance to/exit from the country) and 2 lanes for freight vehicles (exit from the country).
The width of the traffic lanes will range from 3.75 to 4.25 meters.
It is noted that traffic lanes for cargo vehicles are spatially fixed, whereas the lanes for passenger vehicles and buses are flexible.
The new design of the border checkpoint is of a tangential type, with operating customs bases-terminals for passenger and cargo traffic.
According to the document prepared by Sidprojekt, on an area of 12.31 ha, the plan is to build facilities in the zones of passenger and goods-customs terminals.
