The construction of a Serbian nuclear center in cooperation with Russia has been announced. This is a center with the most modern technologies, and it will be used primarily for medicine and the industry, as announced by the minister for innovations and technological development of Serbia, Nenad Popovic.

– This center will primarily be used for medicine and the industry. The number of oncology diseases has grown enormously, and Serbia wants to keep up with developing countries. The center will be used for the diagnostics and production of pharmaceuticals and semi-conductors which are not present in the world market at the moment – primarily silicon, but also for the diagnostics of large engines – jet engines, rail engines… – Popovic said for TV Prva.

He said that Russia had eight such centers and that there were 14 in Europe.

– But they are all old, over 40-50 years, and this will be the most modern center. It is at the level of a school reactor, a research reactor, not an energy one. Every serious university in the world has one – the minister emphasized.

When asked whether this all means that the ground is being prepared for the potential construction of a nuclear power plant in Serbia, which has been discussed with increasing frequency in the past weeks, Popovic points out that those things are entirely unrelated.

– I believe that Serbia should have a nuclear power plant, because that’s the way to get the cleanest and cheapest energy. However, that couldn’t happen in another 15-20 years, until a consensus is reached – he said.

According to him, the construction of said center will take four to five years and should begin by the end of this year.

– We are now in the phase of establishing a joint company, and a feasibility study is being prepared, which will show the exact numbers in terms of the cost of the whole thing – Popovic concluded.
