In late March, Serbia is to sign, with the Russian state company Rosatom, the Agreement on the joint company which will start building the Center for Nuclear Science by the end of the year, as announced by the minister for innovations of Serbia, Nenad Popovic, at Expo 2020 Dubai. Popovic believes that the solution for the energy crisis in the world lies in the production of nuclear energy and says that Serbia will discuss this not just with the Russians, but also with the Chinese, the Koreans and the Americans.

The agreement on the opening of a joint Center for Nuclear Science was signed in 2019, when the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, visited Belgrade. Now a location is being sought together with Russian experts.

What’s known is that it will be somewhere on the Danube, that the construction will last four years, and it is estimated that the center will contribute to the education system of Serbia a lot.

– The project will be realized in several phases. Initially, it will be oriented toward medical technologies. We will make a good scientific basis for education and non-energy application of nuclear energy in Serbia and other countries of the region and beyond – said Evgeny Pakermanov of Rosatom.

A professor at the Faculty of Sciences in Novi Sad, Miodrag Krmor, said that the center would be able to produce isotopes for medicine and agriculture.

– The plan is for semiconductors to be produced at that center. There will also be other industrial applications which concern the majority of the materials. In principle, it would boost several industries – professor Krmor said.

Although the construction of nuclear plants in Serbia was banned after the Chernobyl disaster over 30 years ago, there’s been more and more discussion about them recently. That they have also been discussed with Rosatom was confirmed by the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, after his meeting with Putin in Sochi.

– We are ready to offer the best solutions and technologies to our Serbian partners. But it has to be a national decision, a decision made by the Serbian state and people. If it is made, we will be ready to support it – said Evgeny Pakermanov of Rosatom.
