In mid-2021, the construction of the port complex in Sremska Mitrovica, on the Sava, was announced as a joint project of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure and the Port Governance Agency. After certain details of the project were made public – the future capacity of 1,500,000 tons of various cargo and the area of the entire complex of 14 hectares – the preparation of the technical documentation started and is now slowly being completed.

The Port Governance Agency has filed a request to the Ministry of Environmental Protection for the authorization of the study of the environmental impact of the project of the expansion and construction of the Port of Sremska Mitrovica, in which parts of the preliminary project, with the future plan of the port’s look, are presented.

According to the submitted documentation, the port, as announced earlier, will spread on 14 hectares, have a capacity of 1,500,000 tons of cargo, which encompasses oil products, grains, various kinds of bulk cargo, liquid products and other semi-products.

The Port of Sremska Mitrovica is planned as an open port concept with the possibility of the further expansion of the capacities as the number of users increases. The space is planned to be divided into four zones, that is, four terminals for the storage of various products and semi-products.

On the left bank of the basin, the plan is to build a 200-m embankment, and it is also said that the concept of a vertical wharf structure, which will be located next to the bulk cargo terminal, in the length of 177 meters, has also been adopted.

After the administrative procedure regarding the environmental impact study is completed, the preliminary project is expected to be fully finished, following which the local administration should start the process of defining and adopting individual planning documents.
