The areas of Stara Planina and Kucaj-Beljanica mountains are under the highest degree of state protection from today, as the procedure of their protection as national parks has been initiated, stated the minister of environmental protection of Serbia, Irena Vujovic. She pointed out that those were to first two national parks to be declared in Serbia after 40 years, earning the status thanks to the great natural wealth in their territories, the Government of Serbia announced.

– The studies for the new national parks, which were prepared by the Institute for Environmental Protection, were uploaded to the website of the Ministry of Environmental Protection today, from which moment the procedure of protection officially started, that is, all the regimes and protection measures that the studies contain are already in effect – Vujovic said.

Upon the completion of the procedure, the National Park Stara Planina should take up 116,000 hectares, whereas the National Park Kucaj-Beljanica should take up around 45,000 hectares.

The last time national parks were declared in Serbia, namely, Tara and Kopaonik, was in 1981.
