Do you know how many solar-powered streetlights save enough energy to power an electric car for a whole year? 100? 1000? In fact, it’s just 15. Now imagine how much energy you could save with a citywide rollout...

Rapid urbanization and population growth are putting more pressure on resources. This is reflected in the environmental impact of cities as they consume over two thirds of the world’s energy and account for more than 70% of global CO2 emissions. Cities are now also under increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact. On the other hand, more than 800 million people worldwide do not have access to electricity grid. Darkness affects the quality of life at night and reduces public safety on roads and streets.

Solar lighting is sustainable, “green” and clean

Solar is widely considered to be the most effective form of renewable energy. It is free and available everywhere in the world and the savings it brings are not only in energy consumption, but also in its transportation and can vary from 50% to 100%. Solar technology is advancing every day, increasing our potential to have a cleaner, healthier, and leaner world.

Apart from using free and renewable energy, solar lighting has several more advantages. On one hand, off-grid solutions alleviate people with no access to grid, and hybrid solar on the other hand covers large population and gives them an opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint.

Solution types can be split in two groups: off-grid, and hybrid which, besides solar charging has also the option of electrical supply from the grid.

Off-grid solar lighting

• Saving cabling and distribution switchgear cost

This system consists of luminaries, solar panels and batteries designed to operate autonomously without any connection with an electrical grid. The solar panels charge the batteries during the day and the stored energy powers the LEDs at night.

Hybrid solar lighting

• For existing grid connected light points

This system is like the off-grid solar system but is connected to a power grid. The solar panels charge the batteries during the day and the stored energy powers the LEDs at night. If the batteries run out of power, the LEDs are powered with energy drawn from the power grid. Therefore, such a system is ideal for savings and switching to “greener” energy in areas without enough sunny hours and where the electrical grid exists.

Philips solar lighting

Philips solar systems combine charger, controller, LED driver and connectivity options on the same board. Available in off-grid and hybrid architectures, the range comprises of solar streetlights and flood lights with wide range of lumen output delivering best in class efficacy.

Solar lighting is part of the recipe for brighter lives and better world.
