Products such as “Billy” book shelves, or “Hemnes” beds by the Swedish furniture manufacturer IKEA have been arriving to the purchasers in the wider Vienna area since October this year in electro-vehicles without CO2 emissions. The Home Delivery sector uses 15 entirely new electric vehicles of the producer Quantron to deliver the goods to the purchasers. Switching to vehicles with zero emission lowers the emission of CO2 produced in delivery to the end-users by around 150 tons a year.

In addition to delivering the goods by e-vans, Gebrüder Weiss also provides other services with its own staff directly at the IKEA warehouse. This includes, among other things, the loading of goods and the dispatching of vehicles. Furniture and home appliances are delivered to the end-user with a double crew, and, as per the purchaser’s request, the goods can be unpacked and assembled on the spot.

Gebrüder Weiss delivers around 60,000 shipments a year with its new electric vehicles in the wider Vienna area. The vehicles are powered with electrical energy while being loaded in the central warehouse, which means that the vans are immediately ready for the ride, without a loss of time.

Delivery without emissions

– The launching of our new electric fleet in Vienna means that we are a step closer to our goal of becoming a climate-neutral company without CO2 emissions by 2025 – says Claes Lindgren, Customer Fulfillment Manager at IKEA Austria.

Vienna is one of the 30 large cities worldwide in which IKEA is switching to vehicles with zero-emission for the delivery of goods. Claes Lindgren adds that, with Gebrüder Weiss, IKEA has a logistics supplier which already has a considerable success in using various alternative vehicle drives in everyday logistics operations.

– Due to the short distances of the delivery of goods in the Vienna area, e-vehicles are ideal for our Home Delivery service. E-vehicles make an important contribution to CO2-free deliveries, especially in areas with a high population density and a high traffic density – says Jürgen Bauer, a member of the Management Board of Gebrüder Weiss. In the future, IKEA’s clients in other parts of Austria will also use e-vans for home delivery.

IKEA partner in Austria and beyond

Gebrüder Weiss is the logistics partner of IKEA since 2017. In addition to Austria, the logistics company also serves IKEA’s clients in the home delivery sector in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. These countries are also ready to switch to the delivery of goods by e-vans. With 220,000 shipments each year, Gebrüder Weiss is the largest logistics partner of the Swedish company for furniture in Austria.
