The Serbian government and the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation signed today the General Framework Agreement on the construction of the Center for Nuclear Technologies and the Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Venture that will implement this project in the Republic of Serbia.

On the eve of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic's visit to Moscow, the agreements were signed by Minister without Portfolio in charge of Innovation and Technological Development and President of the Intergovernmental Committee for Cooperation with Russia Nenad Popovic and Rosatom Overseas President Evgeny Pakermanov, the Government of Serbia announced on its website.

Under these agreements, during the next three years, the Center for Nuclear Medicine based on a cyclotron complex and facilities for the production of radiopharmaceuticals will be built in Serbia.

Popovic pointed out that this is a historic day in the relations between Serbia and Russia, because the mentioned agreements return Serbia to the map of European countries that have capacity for scientific research in the field of nuclear technologies.

As he pointed out, this will increase Serbia's preparedness in the field of medicine, science, research, and we already have requests from the surrounding countries to use the capacities of this center together with our scientists.

Director-General of the State Corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev explained that the Radiopharmaceutical Complex and the Centre for Nuclear Medicine will make high-tech medical care accessible to the citizens of Serbia, aimed primarily at solving problems in the fight against oncological diseases.

He explained that the Radiopharmaceutical Complex and the Center for Nuclear Medicine will make high-tech medical help, directed primarily at solving oncological problems, more available to citizens of Serbia.

– The future center will give a significant contribution to the development of Serbia. The most advanced technologies will be implemented in it, such as the production of radioisotopes which are used for medicinal and industrial purposes, as well as alloyed silicon for the industry, the provision of services for determining the elementary composition of ores and minerals and ecological samples – Likhachev said.

Pakermanov added that within the joint venture with the Serbian side, modern production of radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases will be launched.

This will significantly contribute to the development of advanced nuclear medicine in Serbia and in the entire region, he pointed out, adding that the start of work for the practical implementation of the project is planned for 2022.

The project of establishing a center for nuclear technologies is realized as part of the Interstate Agreement between the governments of Serbia and Russia, signed in 2019 during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Serbia.
